What is the difference between assassination and just plain murder?
Q. Some people say that assassination is the murder of an important person. But then, who decides whether you're important enough to be assassinated. Is there some sort of set way or scale to measure one's importance and to differentiate between assassination and murder?

A. Assassination "is the intentional killing of a specified victim or group of victims, perpetrated for a reason related to his (her, their) public prominence and undertaken with a political purpose in view." If the person who was murdered was a public figure, and the killing was politically motivated, it was an assassination.

Who was the person arrested for planning an assassination attempt on Barack Obama ?
Q. I read a brief article on one of the internet news services, a week or so ago, indicating that someone was arrested for planning an assassination attempt on Barack Obama. I don't know if the arrest was made by Homeland Security or the FBI, or some other law enforcement agency. I am curious to learn who would be crazy enough to attempt to do this.

How important do you haft to be for your death to be considered an assassination?
Q. What is the differance between an assassination and a murder? Attemped murder or Attempted assassination? Is it only a matter of your social status? Is the law different for one than it is for the other? I know this is an odd question, but while listening to a news program I expected them to say one thing and they said the other. Just wondering what makes the difference?

A. An assassination is a politically-motivated murder. It's not about social status -- it's about whether you're a political leader of some kind. MLK was assassinated. Tupac was murdered.

A. Assassination generally refers to the killing of a public figure for political, military or religious reasons. Murder (which can be premeditated and often is - the poster above is incorrect) is the crime of killing someone. The difference between the two terms appears to be steeped primarily in motive, not the actual act.

A. Largely, yes. While Andrew Johnson tried to implement Lincoln's plan for reconstruction, he wasn't Lincoln, who had been considered a hero for being the President during the Civil War. Distrust of Johnson by the Congress, and the inability of Johnson to inspire any support insured that the government would be split over how to do reconstruction and insured that the south would be resentful of everything. If Lincoln had survived, it would have been unlikely that the Congress could have become as "radical" as it did. Lincoln would have been able to persuade them to accept his plan, probably because Lincoln would have likely supported giving basic civil rights to the emancipated slaves. A. The assassination of Lincoln was tremendous. Lincoln was a Republican, while his vice president, Johnson was a Democrat, who was himself from the South. The dominant political party after the war was the Republican party, the Radical Republicans. They wanted to turn the old Southern social order upside down and give blacks the right to vote, and also give them rights to serve in the government as well. Also, Union troops were stationed in the South to keep order. But, Johnson vetoed many of the laws that the Radicals tried to pass, but they ended up overriding Johnson anyway, since they were a very politically strong party. A. This is a strange and winding question. The title part asks "why do you disagree with all the theories..." That would mean someone who agree with no theory including the one that puts Oswald forward as the sole guilty party. The reason why there are so many theories is that there were too many oddities for the Oswald theory to stand unchallenged. That doesn't mean that it isn't right just that peculiar facts abounded - notably Jack Ruby, who killed Oswald, not being the kind of guy who gets overwhelmed by passion for a dead president and thereby takes matters into his own hand. What do you think of the Kennedy Assassination?
Q. meaning JFK, not RFK. I watched the assassination video on youtube (for an assignment), and JFK appears to be have shot in both the front and the back, which is contradictory to the Warren Commission's report. And then there's all those other issues, including Oswald's sudden behavioral changes and the fact that Oswald didn't seem to have a motive at all. Anyway, what do you think?

A. I think there was a conspiracy. I believe that the Mob carried out the hit, but who hired them is lost to history (or until the archives are released). I read that two days before his assassination, RFK said he hoped to use the powers of the presidency to find out the truth about his brother's assassination. I'd love to check the Zapruder film again to see if more than three shots can be heard. If so, the Warren Commission's theory falls apart.

Does anyone know anything about the Assassination of Julius Caesar?
Q. I am doing a 10 page paper on Julius Caesar and his Assassination plot, and i was wondering if anyone knew anything that might help me.

A. As others have said, it is better on Wikipedia. However, two points: 1. Contrary to popular belief, he was not killed in the Senate House. By the time of his death the Senate House had been burned down and was being rebuilt. He was stabbed in the temporary Senate House, which I think was some theatre - don't quote me which building it was though. 2. Mark Antony tried to warn Caesar before he was killed, as he had learned on the plot. He gave Caesar a letter about the plot, which Caesar held whilst walking to the temporary Senate House and whilst signing the false contract (which I am sure you know about). He never actually read the letter - he was planning on doing so after the meeting. A bit ironic really.
