What are some of the recent biographies that are supposedly true but actually fiction?
Q. I have heard that there are some "biographies" that have turned out to actually been fiction and totally made-up by the author. Can anyone give me any examples that are quite recent?

A. James frey's a million little pieces is the one that set off the fire storm. Augusten Boroughss Running With Scissors has had some dirt cast on it by the people he wrote about. They say it is fiction. Almost any movie adaptation such as North's autobiographical novel based Hidalgo. Even Angela's Ashes has been accused of playing a bit loose with the facts. Here's an interesting article on the phenomenon and it's history.

Is it pointless to read multiple biographies on the same person?
Q. I just finished reading Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson. I found Einstein's life so interesting that I'd like to read more about him, but would reading another biography just give me the same information that I already got from the first one I read? Any suggestions on what else I could do to satisfy my Einstein-thirst?
Asked by bluewind31 - Sat Dec 27 15:38:25 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No, it's not pointless, especially if it's a subject that interests you. Many of the facts will be the same, but some won't be, and rereading the facts that were in your first book will help you to remember the information better. Also, some biographies might go into more detail on a topic than others. The more you read, the fuller the understanding you'll have of him, so I don't think it's pointless at all. And about your second question regarding other suggestions to "satisfy [your] Einstein-thirst," you could watch documentaries. I'm sure plenty of them have been made and it might be helpful to associate some images with the text you've been reading.

What are some good biographies/stories about bad people imprisoned without trial, then becoming good?
Q. It's cliche for a Mandela-type story. So the person is already a criminal but there's not enough evidence to convict him of a major crime. A draconian law imprisons him without a trial. Can anyone point me to biographies of British missionaries who visited British India?
Q. I'm interested in the missionaries who visited British India (especially the Sindh region) towards the end of the 19th century-Early 20th Century. And those who met the then collector Colonel Rathborne. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

A. That is very specific. You might start with one of these Thomas Patrick Hughes, Missionary to British India: The Class Ceiling By Elizabeth Hughes Clark or The Attitudes of British Protestant Missionaries towards Nationalism in India: With Special Reference to Madras Presidency, 1919-1927 Author: Elizabeth Susan Alexander or Social protest in India : British Protestant missionaries and social reforms, 1850-1900 by Geoffrey A Oddie and then use their bibliographies to find what you need. Good luck.

A. I can't say that I know of any biographies that have brought me the results that you are looking for. I've read biographies on Rockefeller, Ronald Reagan, Trump, Mary Kay, Martha Stewart, and maybe some others along the way, but none of them charged me up. Whenever I am feeling down, I don't read a book, but rather excerpts from the Bible or a collection of quotes that I have. It's easier to act on a short statement than on something that takes several hours to read. That's why people can lose more weight in 10 days than in 30.

A. You will not likely find any cases in the United States. You cannot be imprisoned without being first convicted of a crime. Sometimes people are jailed pending trial and they can be in jail for many months even years before the trial is over, but to put in prison, you have to be convicted. Without a trial, an attorney ... family or other people can file a Writ of Habeas Corpus. It is the process by which someone contests their "unlawful detention." In some other countries you might find this happening, but not in the United States ... except with the detention of suspected terrorists at GITMO and the internment of the Japanese during World War II. You might look into Nelson Mandela. He was imprisoned in South Africa, but he was… [cont.]

Looking for biographies about interesting or influential women in history.?
Q. I enjoy reading biographies, stories or what have you about women in history. I've read many books on Eliabeth I, Elenor of Aquitaine, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, various saints, women writers such as Jane Austin, the Bronte sisters, etc. I would like some suggestions for lesser known stories about women in history. Maybe something similar you've read, really enjoyed and would like to suggest.
Asked by DeTe - Sat Jul 19 15:23:29 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I'd suggest Queen Isabella by Alison Weir, the biography of the wife of Edward II of England and the mother of Edward III. Also, The Unredeemed Captive by John Demos, which tells the story of Eunice Williams, who was captured in the Deerfield raid of 1704 (she was about seven at the time) and later refused repatriation, preferring her life among the Native Americans in Canada, and Queen Emma and the Vikings, by Harriet O'Brien. The second book deals with a woman who has been described as England's "Mother, Grandmother, and Aunt"--she was the mother of Edward the Confessor and the great aunt of William the Conqueror.
