Where can a convicted felon find a job in CA not in the manual labor field?
Q. My boyfriend is a convicted felon, and has been working odd jobs in manual labor. He is having difficulty maintaining this due to his health. Because of his conviction, it is nearly impossible to find a "regular" non-minimum wage job. He is very smart, articulate, and has great people skills. He needs a new direction. Please help with ideas! Thank you.

A. I have worked in a federal prison for 19 years... NO! Inmates can not be in possession of a firearm of any type either in personal possession OR in a house where a firearm is located. he does not have to have knowledge, his mere presence is enough... He can not be in possession of parts of a firearm, firing pins, slides, ammo, ANY part of a fire arm. Antique firearms that will not fire qualify for this as well... ANY felony is fair game period. A convicted felon is a convicted felon is a convicted felon... This is how a prosecutor is going to look at it. Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is a federal crime, the time starts at 10 years minimum. Any thing after that is negotiable... I have read case files, and I've… [cont.]

Can a convicted felon travel to the United States legally?
Q. I'm an American with one felony conviction. I know Soviet Canada will not allow me to travel to their "fair" land. But I was wondering how hard it is for a convicted felon to get into America legally.

A. You may need to contact the US Department of Homeland Security to find out what your limitations are as far as coming into the country legally. Depending on what type of felony you were convicted of. You may be denied access from coming into the United States. Check with DHS and find out what your options are.

How is it that a felon is not allowed to vote in most states, but the same felon can pass laws in the Senate?
Q. I'm referring to the fact that Alaskan Senator, Ted Stevens, now a convicted felon will still be allowed to run for another term in office. How is it that there is no law prohibiting a felon from becoming a U.S. senator and making laws, but the same felon is not allowed to vote in most states?

A. It has to do with that double standard, just like you have to pass a random drug test to stock shoes at wal-mart but you can wash down 3 percocets and 1 Oxycontin with jack daniels, pound a half case of import beer then do a line of cocaine and then spin around in your chair sign a raise for yourself, sign a bill taking away senior citizens health care and no blinks an eye.

Why is it illegal for a felon to wear body armor?
Q. I have seen this in the news twice now, in just the last week. Two separate incidences where somene was arrested because of wearing body armor. I can understand weapons, but I can't comprehend why it is illegal for a felon to posess or wear body armor. Can someone explain the origin of this federal law? Why it exists? It seems like, once a convicted felon, mended ways or not, they are no longer allowed to protect themselves. I just want to know.
Asked by katherinepdavis - Wed Apr 1 17:17:20 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A reasonable, average individual does not need to wear body armor. Body armor is only necessary if you believe you are going to enter into a situation where you might get shot. A felon should never willingly or knowingly enter into a situation where there might be gunfire. Most reasonable people would assume that if you are going to wear body armor it is because you are going to be involved in a situation where you might get shot at - possibly even by the police. Felons have no business being in such a situation; removing their right to wear body armor is a means of preventing them from involving themselves in such a situation. Any felon who has credible evidence that their life is truly in danger from a threat that they cannot… [cont.]

Asked by Lorraine D - Wed Nov 7 19:53:12 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. He needs to ask his probation officer to apply to the Interstate Compact so that he can move to Indiana. Since he's employed in IN, it's very likely that it will get approved. There's a fee involved for the transfer application, BTW. The MI probation officer will send the paperwork to the state of MI Interstate Compact office, who will then contact the IN Interstate Compact office. The packet will be forwarded to the local county probation office, and they will make the determination as to whether or not to accept him for supervision. How far north of the border do you live? Does he have a travel permit to go to IN to work each day? Do you live in IN already?

Q. My husband is a felon. We are moving from Arizona to Alaska and I am wondering if there will be any difficulties going through the border patrol of Canada with felony possession of marijuana in his background. So far, we understand that we need our state issued identification card/driving license and proof of citizenship. What about car insurance, what will they accept, what are their requirements?

A. If he was charged over 5 years ago and has had no trouble with the law since you should be fine. You can find all this info on the Canadian Border Services website. If its within 5 years though, sorry, they won't let you cross. In that case I would suggest you fly. Make sure you have your birth certificate and one piece of photo I.D. Of course it's good to have proof of ownership and insurance but I've crossed the border a gazillion times and never been asked this. Actually I went down to Ohio for a week and totally forgot I had an outdated insurance certificate hahaha!

What jobs can you get as a convicted felon?
Q. My husband is a convicted felon for something very stupid over 5 years ago. Before he got locked up he was almost finished with his degree to be a x-ray tech. He was told he could not do that anymore?? Since he has been out he has been doing construction (electrician). But now here in Florida there is NO WORK for construction! What other options is there?

A. Well, its hard to generalize it by simply asking "What other jobs is there?" Its all about what companies care about such things and and which others don't, but in some fields he has no chance. It is tough though, I was in the same boat 6 years ago and its been hard for me since finishing school as well.

Asked by Linkin Park Fan 4 lyfe! - Tue Aug 14 19:27:02 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. He can be a convicted felon and still vote. If it was withheld ajudication then when he is finished with whatever punishment he regains all of his former rights. So it can be both. If you do not like him then thats all you need to know stay away from him. The only reason you should want his criminal background is if you are employing him or he is a sex offender and they don't get withheld ajudication so he wouldn't be able to vote and if it is none of those reasons then you have no right to his criminal background. If he makes you uneasy stay away from him but don't be nosy and pry into other people's business it will only cause you trouble.

Can a convicted felon sign his name on a remodeling contract?
Q. as "owner" of the company he says "he owns" when in fact it's his girlfriend that owns the company. She passes as his "wife". He signed a remodeling contract in the state of Texas with me, and he has quit the job due to my "lists of things gone wrong", which made him explode. He says he will get all sorts of "liens, charges, etc against me, the home owner. But, it's his name on the contract, and in Texas as a habitual felon, he can't even own a company. I found out about his background too late.

A. thats depends on how smart he is and if he can write.. i am sure that even a convicted felon can authorize/negociate a contract(even in texas).. he has paid his debt to society, and is trying to make a living, just like the rest of us.. if you have a problem with his work, then youll want to discuss the matter with your "state contractor licensing board", and see if they can resolve your issue.. did the building inspector see the work and did it meet his approval?

Can a convicted felon get power of attorney over someone in the state of Alabama?
Q. My uncle is a convicted felon from the state of Alabama. He embezzled money from a bank that he worked at and he went to prison for two years. Now that my grandmother (his mother) is losing her mind (she has Dementia) he took advantage of her and got Power of Attorney over her. He also had the papers back dated, she also said that she does not remember signing any papers. Can he legally do that?
Asked by LC - Sun Feb 21 17:50:45 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sounds a crooked deal to me, but if she's losing her mind it's not so surprising that she may have forgotten signing. As far as I recall the power of attorney has to be given voluntarily, or else granted by a court, and the voluntary signing has to be done in the presence of witnesses who must also be convinced that she is capable of understanding what she is signing. You may need to consult a lawyer.
