"Nomination" is part of the process of selecting a candidate for either election to an office, or the bestowing of an honor or award. "Presumptive nominee" is a term used when a person or organization believes that the nomination in inevitable. The act of being a candidate in a race is called a "candidacy."

"Candidate" is a derivative of the Latin "candida" (white). In Ancient Rome, people running for political office would usually wear togas chalked and bleached to be bright white at speeches, debates, conventions, and other public functions.

Where can I find good and correct information regarding candidates running for office?
Q. I would like to find a good website (or several websites) that will give me correct information regarding the candidates running for office (in the US), specifically for president. I don t want opinions or link to blogs, or any far right-wing or far left-wing sites that sugar coats the facts to make their party look good. I m looking for facts. I also make it a point not to vote for a specific party; I vote for the person who I feel will do a better job. In the debates you always hear of one person bringing up they voted this way or that, but the other person says it s a lie. I don t follow every move the candidates make but obviously this is a critical presidential election coming up and I want to make sure my vote goes to the right… [cont.]

A. If you want to review voting records, try Thomas (thomas.loc.gov). There are also a ton of books that you can buy. Try "Congressional Voting Scores and Interest Group Ratings." I'm not sure if DC is it's only location but if there is a Politics and Prose near you just go there and they have every resource you could hope for and their sales people are generally very informative/helpful. Hope this helps.

What candidates have won the presidential elections without winning their home states?
Q. I read that there have been two presidential candidates in history of the U.S. who won the general election without winning the electoral vote in their home state, but I can't find out which ones. My 12-year-old daughter's civics teacher didn't know and told her to look it up. Please make her look smart!

A. The definition of a home state usually refers to the state where the candidate was resident during the nomination process. The following candidates won the election, but lost the state that they were resident in at the time of nomination: Nixon in 1968 lost New York, Wilson in 1916 lost New Jersey, Polk in 1844 lost Tennessee

Why are candidates like McCain and Romney getting so many votes?
Q. They don't offer any change from business as usual and McCain is just another Bush clone. Is it any wonder that we are getting the same junk? And I don't even mean just them, most of the candidates on BOTH sides aren't substantially different. The major issues affecting the country are overlooked in favor of stances on abortion and trivial slander campaigns. These people care more about getting in office than what they would actually do to turn the country around. Clinton and Obama talk about bringing troops home, but both voted in favor of it and funding it.
